The Scene We’ve All Experienced
Picture this. You’re walking down a busy street, perhaps heading to your favorite café, or maybe you’re out for a relaxing day at the park. Suddenly, the unmistakable scent of cannabis wafts through the air. It’s a familiar scenario for many of us, but it’s a reminder of an important aspect of cannabis law that too often is overlooked.
Public Consumption Is Still a No-Go
Despite the increasing legalization and acceptance of cannabis, public consumption remains illegal in many places (many- but not all. Looking at you New York… which allows smoking cannabis to occur anywhere people may smoke tobacco) . This includes not just streets, but also theaters, parks, and other public spaces. It’s essential to remember that while you may enjoy the benefits of cannabis, consuming it in public can lead to legal trouble. And if you are a dispensary agent or budtender, reminding customers of this can also go a long way to keeping our industry professional and compliant.
Why It Matters
You might wonder why this rule exists. In addition to cannabis being federally illegal (yes, even when it moves to schedule 3) we have a commitment to youth prevention. Another key reason is consideration for others. Just as you wouldn’t light up a cigarette in the middle of a crowded playground, it’s considered rude (and of course illegal) to consume cannabis publicly. You never know who might be nearby—kids, individuals with respiratory issues, or even someone who simply prefers not to be exposed to cannabis.
What You Should Know
- Stay Informed: Regulations around cannabis are continuously evolving. Make it a point to stay updated on the latest laws in your area.
- Educate Others: If someone asks you about public consumption, kindly inform them about the regulations. Sharing knowledge helps everyone.
- Respect Public Spaces: Always be mindful of where you are. Enjoy your cannabis in the comfort of your home or in designated private areas. You may even be lucky enough to have local social consumption lounges to refer to those curious consumers.
A Gentle Reminder
We get it—cannabis is a part of your lifestyle (ours too!). Let’s all respect the law and the community around us. By doing so, we can continue to enjoy cannabis responsibly and pave the way for more positive acceptance in the future.
Stay informed, stay respectful, and most importantly, stay considerate. Happy consuming!
